Here's another interesting finding - the US Dept. of Labor has reported recently that almost half the 7.4 million self employed business owners in America are baby boomers.

I love this quote:

Why does that quote hit home with me?  Because my background is healthcare.  In a very, very short time in history, the coverage for my services as a critical care nurse shrank.  Suddenly, as a Cardiac Care Unit Manager, that once had all of the resources necessary to save lives every single day, found herself in a panic situation. 

Almost over night, things changed.  Without going into the details of the decline of healthcare services, let me just say that many clinically expert baby boomer women in positions of authority lost their influence to promote health and wellness at a time that critically ill patients needed us. 

So, what does that have to do with now?  PLENTY!  Now baby boomer women are in the drivers' seat.  When baby boomer women speak, people listen.  Why?    can we create wealth by saving money?  Does that sound like a silly question?  Who can save money these days?  Well, we can.  

But not if all we have is a job.  We have to earn money through our own commercial enterprise.  In other words, if you have a job right now, chances are, the job will never be the vehicle where you can earn enough money to save, and even if we could, it won't be enough to create wealth.  Entrepreneurs create wealth.  Hired people usually can't. 

But baby boomer women are catching on to the fact that a huge wave of wealth creators are on the rise.  And as I said, you can be one of them.  You might be a hirling now but no one can stop you from making more retired than hired -  that is, no one except you.  You can stop yourself from creating wealth before you even begin.  It's easy to give up your dreams when you're approaching 60 years old. 

Most people are approaching 60.  There are 79 million baby boomers living right now and about half of them are us - baby boomer women.  Although most people actually spend more money than they make, that is not the huge trend on the horizen.  The current state of most working women right now is that they are not running their own company. 

The fact is, as long as we work for someone else, they make a fortune, we make a living.  And retiring early with much of a nest egg is only for the very few.  So why not consider, as you approach 60 or 70 - why not consider starting your own business, an internet business.

The internet is full of non-attraction marketing.  So if you offer value first, it is a very pleasant surprise to people who are surfing the internet and find you. 

When you search for information online, you aren't usually looking for a person to get to know or a new product to buy.  Usually we go online to find information, right?  Maybe even a solution to a problem or dilemma.  True?

First, You Must PRE-Sell

Yes, I am in business and I am making sales but I believe it's because I've learned to PREsell. 

Did you read the post before this one?  The reality is that my online biz is quite literally easier to manage than a job or an offline business.  When women get this, it's so empowering and motivating that nothing can stop us!

Here's a post-it note for you...  Online, if we over-deliver online with our writing or someone else's, providing high quality value information for people, real people who are searching for what you offer.  

Be credible.  Success on the net all begins with giving.  Think of your "pages," posts, forum conversations, etc. as YOU, Inc. 

Creating "You Inc." Can Be The Good, The Bad, Or The Ugly

Don't be a stranger with a sales pitch.  Be the personable YOU, not the commercial you.  We all have a pushy side that can get ugly.  We don't mean to be bad.  We just want to be sure everyone understands our point of view for their sake.  Women are like that so of naturally.  BUT, we shouldn't be that way as a first impression, especially online.  

Believe it or not, there truly is a place in business for what some call "hype."  But it only has a GOOD result when the commercial YOU follows the real you who has learned to market well using words that help people discover the value you have to offer.

Make More "Retired" Than Hired!

Well, all I can tell you is my story. You can begin immediately and see your first check a lot sooner than I did although I was quite happy with that first check coming in after just 3 months of putting up this blog. I almost framed it :)

The formula for success that works for me is explained well by the "Site Build It!" founder, Ken Envoy. This is his formula, but it's exactly what I do. Although I write almost every week about each part of this equation, that doesn't mean the same topic is right for you.  If you didn't click yet on Site Build It! above, do that now to see what I mean. 

So let's look at this formula for building a successful business online.  Content refers to videos, articles, blogging, advertising, etc.  Your web of content online is step one.  I started with this blog.

Content

But there are many ways to put up content.  Those who are really serious about an online business should not mess around with a blog.  Use Site Build It! so that you can get into profitability sooner and not later.  Blogging for business like I'm doing is much slower but it's a great way to start if you just want added income.  

I started making money after I had about 30 pieces of content pointing back to this blog, linking to it with the right keywords for my target market. 

Traffic

Basically, there are four really great ways to bring traffic to your central "hub" like a blog or your main website. 

1. Social media networking
2. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
3. Email Marketing
4. Article Marketing

But even if you just do two of the four, you can succeed.  Notice, I didn't include ads.  Successful advertising actually takes a lot of study.  Don't start with that.  If you are reading this post, you probably 

• met me online at a social media site or
• found me on google using keywords that are all about internet MLM, or 
• read some of my articles elsewhere that linked here or
• you're on my list and I sent you an email

PRE-sell

Preselling is NOT selling. I know that doesn't really explain it but it's so important do much more than just hype. There is a place for hype. There really is a way to make hype and the hard sell work.  A good sales pitch is sometimes necessary but not until you get to the last piece of the formula - monetization. The rest of the time you are pre-selling.

So what does that mean.  Basically, it means selling yourself first.  Pre-selling means gaining trust. It means people are sold on you and the content you provide.

After successful pre-selling, you can easily not just sell, but build a business.

Making a few online sales now and then versus building a successful online business... they're actually two different things.

Monetization

After Pre-selling, now you can sell :) Content, driving traffic and preselling are all part of getting to know your customers.  They help you learn what they're looking for as you interact with them online in forums and from the comments they leave on your articles, videos, blog posts, etc. 

If you provide enough value up front for free in order to meet the needs of your target market, they will become your customers.   

Just remember that whatever you use to monetize your central website needs to be great stuff, or you'll loose them. The first three steps of the formula, content, traffic and preselling, will build business relationships. The last piece of the formula, the sale, is a natural result of the business relationships you build.

The Sales Funnel

I have another article to help with the overall concept of building your marketing content strategy.  After you build it, they will come, and then you can take a break and see the world!  It is the initial set up that takes a few months, then it's just a matter of two things, add more content and more traffic.  It isn't that hard after a while because your satisfied customers spread the word.  That's the best advertising and it's free, but you have to earn it.

Some days, no.  In fact, some of us seem to be sort of dropping out.  I think it's a temptation to want out of the struggle.  I'm talking to myself now and to you.  During my career as a nurse executive, there were times when I was "taken out."  People loose their jobs every day but that doesn't make it any easier to take.  If you are "taken out" of the work force, so-to-speak, or afraid you might be downsized soon, take heart.   

Here's what we must always remember, whether it is a job struggle, a hard time with your kids, a lay off, a spiritual struggle, or anything that tries to break your spirit, just say to that situation in your fearless female heart, "Don't mess with me!"

Baby Boomer women are a vastly underestimated force both in the market place and in life.  There are  over 40 million of us.  Many of us are educated, relatively affluent career women who know we have a "don't mess with me" kind of spirit, but we are just strong inside, not mean.  

Grandmothers Are Not What They Used To Be.

We are still nice, just like our moms and grandmothers.  But grandmothers as most baby boomer women are, now live in a very different world than when we used to visit Grandma. A lot of us have worked as executives in the last several years, maverick types-we had to be.  We can and we have handled just about everything. Like Arwen, in Lord Of The Rings, we believe we can ride like the wind. We still think of ourselves as her age, immortal, strong and beautiful-and we are, each of us in our own way.

When tempted to forget all that, don't!  We are a powerful force and we must use our influence, our power, as a force for good.  Now, in a nice sort of way, tell any thing stopping you, to just GET OUT OF YOUR WAY.  Save the day, ride like the wind, be strong.

I will write a book on the deep meaning of that experience and how it added to my spiritual belief that God gives us the desires of our heart. The dreams we have are not made up, they are being discovered, revealed to us, and it is our responsibility to carry them out.

But so very often, one critical requirement of carrying out that responsibility of making our dreams come true, is money.

We need money.  Did you know that there are more quotes in the bible by Christ on money than there are on love?

Many times in order to be an influential force for good, we have to have the means, i.e. money.  Even to stay motivated in building a business of our own, money, cash flow, does wonders :) for motivation.

In MLM, it is so important to have a steady stream of extra cash to put back into your MLM business for advertising, as well as for inspiration and motivation. 

I think when we leave our salaried 9 to 5 job, it's exciting at first to begin our own business.  As Baby Boomer Women we know we can do it!  But it's also a little unnerving to not KNOW the next time "the check's in the mail!"

One of the solutions is so simple yet network marketers are not taught to do it.  You can make money even when the person you are trying to recruit says no to your business opportunity and/or products!

Success in management in a word requires leadership.  I got the job - I moved from education into management and I liked that even better!  More control, more influence.  I could continue to teach any time I wanted, plus I had more clout, more formal influence. 

Professionalism

What does formal influence and leadership have to do with marketing 101??  Formalized influence in Multi-level Marketing is professionalism in marketing.  It's like a promotion from unsuccessful MLM amateur to highly successful MLM Professional. 

I first learned about this in a free eBook by Ann Sieg, called The 7 Great Lies Of Network Marketing.  Have you read it?  In it I had a chance to buy her really famous eBook, The Renegade Network Marketer.  Before I give you the free eBook and encourage you to buy the other one, here's your next assignment:  watch Renegade Network Marketing FAQs .  It's the basics - the FUN-damentals of marketing 101. 

However, in the hospital setting, especially in critical care, the pay for promoting to instructor was very nice indeed.  I was 32.

Then I discovered something.  I absolutely love to teach.  Spending hours preparing a lecture, a workshop or an entire seminar felt like no time at all.  Loved it.  So I thought, when I get my masters, it will be in education, a masters in nursing education, that's for me.

That's not what I did but I'll say more about that later. 

What's My Point?  Action Traction: Act On Knowledge

The point is, once again, the Lord God was orchestrating the desires of my heart.  To help other nurses be the best they can be was my thing.  For two years, I trained new graduate nurses in two very busy ICUs and trained all the new employees in the Cardiac ICU - all of them - techs, LPNs, RNs, inexperienced, and experienced.  Busy.  Loved it.

Imparting knowledge in a classroom is great.  I actually like standing in front of people teaching if I'm prepared.  But the really neat thing is helping others operationalize theory (grad school talk)  But it's true, seeing people act on knowledge I taught them was really humbling.   I taught them to save lives and they did.

The desires of my heart that are God-given have revolved around helping others -  especially girlfriends.  I'm a nurse.  My whole career in healthcare gave me wonderful friends, mostly women, whose desire was the same as mine, to care for the sick and often, to save their lives. 

Nursing's whole focus is to promote health and wellness.  You can't promote health any better than to bring people back from death to life.  For 9 years, that was my job.  In critical care nursing, we were helping others, promoting health and wellness in the middle of an extremely dynamic environment of disease and critical illness. 

Cardiac arrest is not as common in the hospital now as it was then.  In the 70's my girlfriends and I saved literally hundreds of lives.  We were "code blue" nurses trained by one of the best cardiac ICU intensivists I've ever known.  He was a cardiologist who taught us far beyond Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) 

A few outstanding critical care nurses and close friends back then were men but most of us were women, young girls actually. 

So What?

So what does my background have to do with becoming a millionaire - PLENTY.  Why?  Because I am a Baby Boomer raised to understand that I can be a force for good.  Most of us, men and women in our 50s right now do understand what that means, even if we forgot while trying to be hip.  (NOT proud of my hippie wanna be days) 

Girlfriends, we have huge economic power and we must use if as a force for good.  Don't retire.  Just work for you now in order to change the world.  Corporate America does not give us enough autonomy to create the kind of change I'm talking about...
